Originally from the State of Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia, Benson earned a Associate of Arts Degree in Liberal Studies from the Eastern Arizona College, a Bachelor of Science Degree in General Studies from Eastern Oregon State College and a Master of Arts Degree in Education from San Diego State University.
While enrolling at Eastern Oregon State College in 1989-1992, he served as a computer lab assistant and a sports equipment manager for the college. Upon graduation he worked for a vocational training center before moving to Pohnpei in December 1993. In February 1994, he was hired as a computer operator for a United Nations Population Fund with the COM-FSM Division of Education for one year. Since then Benson has served under different projects at the college, which include the Talent Search Program (TSP), Peer Counseling Center (PCC), Special Education Teacher Training Initiative (SETTI), Special Education Programs for Pacific Island Entities (SEPPIE), and Teacher Quality Enhancement Grant (TQEG). From January of 2005 became a full-time instructor and recently became the Chairperson for the COM-FSM Division of Education.

Chairperson & Instructor, Education Division, College of Micronesia - FSM . Duties and responsibilities include – teach courses in the Education Division; and serve on the Curriculum, Admission Board, and Personnel Committee

- 1991-1993 Vocational Trainer . New Day Enterprises, La Grande , Oregon . Worked with special needs clients with career orientations and mainstreaming.
- 1994- 1995 Computer Application Specialist . UNFPA Project. Worked with regional education specialist in the development of curriculum materials in Population Education.
- 1995-1996 Counselor – Talent Search Program, at the College of Micronesia-FSM . Works with first generation students in primary and secondary public schools to complete elementary and high school and enroll in college.
- Helps dropouts to re-enter secondary and post-secondary education programs.
- 1996-2005 Project Coordinator . Coordinates SEPPIE, SETTI and Title X: Family Planning Program at the College of Micronesia-FSM .
