Benchmark #1 -ED 210 Intro to Teaching
Technology Skill-Using Word Processing in the Classroom
Student Directions:
1. Your task is to read the article below  about why teachers might use word processing in teaching. Word-processing in Teaching- this is a short article by Georgia State University's College of Education and Division of Continuing Education.
2. Check out the website by Claire Bradin Siskin below. Look over the different ways that you can use word processing and the reasons why you would create a website for your students.What you can do with Word Processing in any classroom-by Claire Bradin Siskin
3. If you don't know how to do word processing or you want to improve your word processing skills, then click on the Step by Step links here.
4. Do Exercises 1 and 2. Turn them in to Sylvia Henry or your Technology Mentor. Exercise 1 Using Microsoft Word Exercise 2 Using Microsoft Word and Internet Explorer
5. Look over the Additional Resources just below for more ideas on how to integrate Word Processing skills into classroom assignments.

6. Portfolio Assignment: Do Assignments 1 and 2 listed below. If you have questions, please see Carol, Sylvia, or your Technology Mentor.
Assignment #1- Write up an activity sheet, which includes title, header or footer, page numbers, a table, a drawing, and consistent margins. Use spell checking and save in different formats such as Rich Text Format (RTF) or ASCII (TXT).Turn it in on a disk or send it to Sylvia or Carol by email.
Assignment #2-Submit an electronic word processor document containing features typical in complex materials for students or complex products by students, specifically, an automatically generated table of contents, outline formatting, and no spelling errors that a spell-checking program can detect.
OR Submit electronic files containing two document templates (sometimes called "stationery"), with styles (sometimes called "font styles" or "paragraph styles"), that the candidate might use to prepare materials for K-12 pupils, or that K-12 pupils might use in a writing assignment.

 

Benchmark #2 -ED 210 Intro to Teaching
Technology Skill-Integrating the Internet into Classroom Activities
Student Directions:
1. Do the  "5 minute guide to using the Internet. "  This will give you a short overview on how to use the Internet.
2. Check out "How to use the Favorites Folder." This is a pdf file and in order for you to see it on your computer you  have to have Adobe Acrobat software. If your computer doesn't, then Sylvia has a copy in the lab for you look at. Ask her for it.
3. Get familiar with the necessary computer terms.
4. Read the short essay by Ted Nellen on using the Internet and how it can change the way students approach writing. The Writing Process on the Internet  and read Evaluation in the Technology Enhanced Classroom (There are a few typos here, but the information is comprehensive.)
6. Read about using Scavenger Hunts in a Classroom. What are they? Why do you use them? How do you use the?
7. Do this Scavenger Hunt about Marine Animals.
8.  Look over other resources that are on the Internet: Lesson Plans, Tips for Using the Internet, and Free Software.

9. Do assignments 3 and 4.
Assignment #3-Construct and share a categorized/organized Favorites file(bookmark list) of at least 20 sites with the instructor/trainer.
Assignment #4-Construct a simple working webpage containing at least 3 links to pages created by others and publish that to the web using Web Publishing Wizard.
OR Write a well thought out and creative lesson plan that includes the use of World Wide Web as an essential component.

Assignment # 10-present printouts of two alternative PowerPoint presentations of the same content, each including at least 5 cards each with at least 4 points on some cards, but using differing fonts and styles, graphics, and transitions.
Assignment #11-write a well thought out and creative instructional plan that includes the use of presentation software as an essential component (Look at Assignment 7 if you need an example of how to write up a lesson plan.)

 

Benchmark #6 -ED 303 Math Methods
Technology Skill-Using Spreadsheets and Databases in Math class
 
Student Directions:
1. Read the article Math and Science Connections using EasyExcel
2. Read the article  The Great International Pennies Toss by Paul Reese & Mona Monroe (using Spreadsheets)
3. Read the Article on Teaching the First Database Skills to Students by Diana Charles Stevenson
4. Read the Intro- Excel (This is a pdf file, so if you don't have Adobe Acrobat on your computer, you won't be able to read it. You can also check out a copy of the handout from the Language and Literature Lab.)
5. Do the Online Excel 97 Tutorial or Excel 2000 Tutorial
6.Build the M & M Database using the Mighty M & M Lesson Plan ( Pretend you have M & Ms or borrow the "imitation bag of M and Ms" from the lab.)
7.Now go on to learn about using Graphs and Charts with your students.

10. Do Assignments 12, 13, and 14.
Assignment#12- write a well thought out and creative instructional plan that includes the use of a spreadsheet or database as an essential component integrating Science content. Send it in RTF format to cwduffy@comfsm.fm
Assignment #13- present printouts of a data set two columns wide and 20 rows long, that uses formulas in the third column or twenty first row to compute new variables or summaries, and that represents the data in tables or graphs.
OR present printouts of a database that contains at least 10 records and at least4 fields per record, that uses the find/sort functions to select a sub-set of cases, and print out lists of the whole data set and the sub-set.
Assignment #14- submit to their instructor or trainer electronic spreadsheet files containing a numeric data set pertinent to a K-12 subject, along with statistical and graphical analyses that bring out patterns in the data that should be revealed to K-12 students, or that K-12 students should discover in Math or Science data.

Benchmark #11- Teaching Practicum (4 th year program)
Technology Skill- Demonstrating Technology in the Classroom
Student Directions:
Create  your lesson integrating technology
Meet with the mentor to discuss the lesson plan
Teach the lesson
Afterwards write a short journal about the teaching experience. Reflect on what went well and on what you feel you need to do to improve the lesson.
Meet with your mentor and discuss the lesson.
Revise your lesson based on your discussion with your mentor.

write a thoughtful and creative lesson plan that includes any component of technology that you have learned so far; execute the lesson plan with your students while being observed by your mentor.

Portfolio:

Each Education student should have a technology teaching portfolio when they graduate. This portfolio could then be used to demonstrate your technical skills and understanding of the teaching methodology involved in using computers and technology in the classroom. A completed portfolio will include the following:

3-Lesson plans
Journals that include mentoring and self-reflection information
Classroom observations
Supervisor observations
Samples of participation in List-Serve, E-Mail, and ICQ Chat sessions
