United Nations

The COM FSM was awarded status as a partial depository of United Nations documents in 1999(DL 370). Other depositories in the Pacific Region include: Nelson Memorial Public Library in Samoa; University of Papua New Guinea; University of Hawaii; and the University of the South Pacific in Fiji. There are also various depositories in New Zealand and Australia.

As a partial depository the Library receives the following material: the Official Records of the main organs of the United Nations: the General Assembly; the Economic and Social Council; the Security Council; as well as sales publications which consist of yearbooks, statistical series, monographs and periodicals distributed from the UN Offices in Geneva, New York and Vienna.

The depository also receives publications from the regional commissions ESCAP (Economic and Social Council for Asia and the Pacific) and the ECE (Economic Commission for Europe).

The sales publications are cataloged and can be accessed via the Library's OPAC (online public access catalog). Documents are indexed in the United Nations Documents Index 1998-. Searches can also be done by the librarian online via UNBISnet.

On the 17 September 1991 the Federated States of Micronesia were admitted into the United Nations.

United States Government Documents

The COM FSM Library was awarded status as a Federal Depository in 1982 (no. 293B). The College shares depository status with four other libraries in the Pacific region: the University of Guam; the Flores Memorial Library in Guam and the American Samoa Community College at Pago Pago in American Samoa. The University of Hawaii Library is the Regional Federal Depository for all of the Federal Depository Libraries located in the Pacific.

Of the total of 7648 active items offered by the Superintendent of Documents 1459 or 19.08% are currently received by this depository. Government information products are received from the following departments of the U.S. Government. Agriculture; Commerce; Defense; Education; Energy; Health and Human Services; Interior; Justice; Labor; State; Transportation; and Treasury.

Documents are also received from the following independent establishments and government corporations: The Environment Protection Agency; National Aeronautics and Space Administration; National Archives and Records Administration; National Science Foundation; Peace Corp; U.S. Postal Service

And finally the Legislative; Executive; and Judicial Branches of Government.

The US Government Documents Collection can be accessed via the Monthly Catalog of United States Government Publications; also available in CD ROM and paper versions, and via the Library's OPAC.

Hours

Monday, Thursday and Friday 8 am to 5 pm. Tuesday and Wednesday 8 am to 9 pm.

Loan Policy

Serials and documents are non circulating (exceptions may be made at the discretion of the Librarian). Cataloged books may be issued for two weeks except those of a reference nature. Reading and photocopying facilities are available.

Location

The US Government Documents and United Nations Documents Collections are located on the second floor of the Learning Resources Center.
