Subject:  Update from the President's Office-No.186

Pohnpei Campus    . According to Pohnpei Campus Director, Penny Weilbacher, OMIP Specialist Joseph Barboo of U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Honolulu, accompanied by Haruo Wilter and Victor Hobson of U.S. Embassy, met with all of the recipients of OMIP grants in Pohnpei State at the Governor's Conference Room on May 28th. Representing the COM-FSM at the meeting were Brent Villiers, Patty Grandos, and Penny Weilbacher. The team came to Pohnpei Campus to meet with the staff regarding the grants given to Pohnpei Campus.

Penny also reported that the scaling down of the gymnasium project due to insufficient funds left the building without a floor. In light of this new information, Phase I of the gymnasium structure could not be utilized until Phase II, which requires additional funding in the amount of $100,000, is completed. This information has prompted the Campus Director to look into all funding possibilities including the executive and legislative branches of Pohnpei State and the Rural Development Grant/Loan Program.

A certificate ceremony was held at the Pohnpei Campus nahs on May 18, 2001, to honor Staff Development Award recipients for 2001 who include: Chan Tallon - Award of Recognition; Patty Grandos - Teacher of the Year Award; Patterson Shed - Students' Choice Award; Penny Weilbacher - Community Service Award; and Kester Martin, Howard Rice, Kenye Belcourt, and Yoneko Kanichy - 5 Years of Service Award. Congratulations to all award winners!

During the month of May, Agriculture Extension staff provided workshops and other assistance to farmers and homemakers in the areas of crop production and marketing, swine production, black pepper production, home gardening, banana marketing, nutrition, false sakau, and soil and water conservation. Eight (8) participants in Pahnpe, U, completed a 12-day, once a week course which included topics such as 24-hour food recall, the 3 basic food groups, vitamins A to C and iron and calcium, nutrition for 1-5 year olds, pregnancy, food storage and sanitation, food purchase, and meal planning. In addition, a total of 24 food recipes were demonstrated to the group. A certificate ceremony was held upon the completion of this training which was attended by the Chief Minister of U Municipality, VPCRE Yasuo Yamada, and the Pohnpei Campus Assistant Director, among others. Another group from Tomwara, Sokehs Municipality, has now begun the program. Plans also call for two additional groups in Madolenihmw and U.

National Campus SBA Election Results    . Patricio Ramirez, Student Activities Supervisor, certified the following students as the winners of the Student Body Elections held on May 18, 2001, for School -Year 2001-2002:

Third-year programs in accounting and business administration. According to Dr.    Greg Myers, Director of Research and Planning, the Substantive Change Reports for the Third Year Programs in Accounting and Business Administration were approved for implementation by a subcommittee of the Accrediting Commission. A report on the progress of these programs will be required in 18 months.

Personnel.    Joseph Falmed was hired at the FSM-FMI as a mechanical engineering instructor. Let's all welcome Mr. Falmed.
