Accreditation

The Accreditation Working Group is working on the final draft of the Progress Report that is due on March 15, 2006, to the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC) of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). This report will give an update on what the College of Micronesia-FSM has accomplished on the six recommendations from the Commission since the March 15, 2005 report.

A visiting team from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges will be visiting the College during the week of April 24-25, 2006, to validate the content of the March 15, 2006 report. The Chairperson for the visiting team will be Dr. Mary Smith. President James is expecting to receive more information regarding the team's visit from WASC, especially the visit to State Campuses and the names of the other members of the team.

Dr. Barbara Beno, President for the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) had planned to visit the College of Micronesia-FSM during the month of April 2006. However, Dr. Beno has postponed her trip to the College due to her busy schedule.

Board of Regents

The Board of Regents will be meeting in the State of Kosrae on March 20-24, 2006. The Board will be meeting without the Regent from Chuuk, since the representative from Chuuk State resigned right after the December 2005 meeting. The draft agenda items for the BOR meeting are attached for your information.

College Work Study and SEOG Work Plan for FY 2006

The College’s Work Study and Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant work plan for FY 2006 has been submitted to JEMCO Office through Department of Health Education and Social Affairs and Office of Compact Management for the purpose of expediting the release of funding for these programs. The College hopes that funding for these programs will be available by the first week of April 2006. The further delays on the release of funds for these programs will cause the College to discontinue these programs temporarily pending the availability of funds.

Fundraising Activities for Endowment Fund

The Fundraising Steering Committee will be auctioning used cars and computers on March 18, 2006, at the National Campus Maintenance Shop. A list of cars and computers with their conditions will be posted around Kolonia Town and interested people can visit the National Campus on March 18, 2006 to place their bids on these items.

Update from Human Resource Office

The Staff Development Day 2006 saw an array of workshops from Rubrics and Assessment Strategies to Understanding your Car where majority of these workshops and sessions were provided by COM-FSM's own faculty and staff. There were 222 plus faculty and staff who attended the events with 24 concurrent sessions.

The Staff Development Committee approved the following staff development funding request during the early part of Spring Semester 2006:

Arinda Swingly- to attend the Pacific Financial Aid Association Conference in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Delihna Manuel- continued tuition for Capella University pursuing a MA degree.
Joe Felix Jr.-continued tuition for his MA degree program at National University.
Resida Keller-to begin an online program at San Diego State University pursuing a MA degree.
Faustino Yarofaisug-to begin an online program at San Diego State University pursuing a MA degree.
Dr. Mary Allen-provide technical consultant/workshop on SLO during the Staff Development Day 2006.
Kenneth Welles-registration fee for a MA degree program at National University.
Martin Mingii-to attend the 2006 Campus Market Expo in Houston, Texas.
Mr. Wilson Kalio-completed his Master’s of Arts Degree in Teaching from the School for International Training in Vermont. Congratulations to Mr. Kalio.

No Resignations

The Chairperson for the Staff Development Committee would like to remind Campus Directors to encourage their faculty and staff to submit their applications for staff development to the committee chair for review and action. A good bulk of the $40,000 earmarked for the State Campuses staff development initiatives are still available.

COM-FSM to Establish Phi Theta Kappa

The Student Services Committee has been given the go ahead by President James to establish and organizes the Phi Theta Kappa at the College of Micronesia-FSM for the honor students. Phi Theta Kappa is a recognized Honor Society worldwide that among other benefits offers scholarships and leadership training for students. The College of Micronesia-FSM will join the PPEC institutions like Palau Community College, Guam Community College, College of Marshall Islands, and Northern Marianas College that have established chapters at their institutions.

The Honor Society contact Mr. Dana Van Deman from Jackson, Mississippi has invited the College to participate at the upcoming 88 th International Convention in Seattle, Washington on April 20-22, 2006. Mr. Deman has offered to give whoever is representing the College scholarships that include two (2) registration fees and the registration for the Officer Academy and Advisor Pre-Conference.

Alternate Energy Working Group Met European Union Energy Expert

The Alternate Energy Working Group met with Dr. Gwen Legros, EU Energy Expert, on Friday, March 3, 2006, to explore possible collaborations between her office and the College. The Working Group also learned funding sources that can be tapped for alternate energy project at the College. The Working Group plans to continue to work with Dr. Legros and to utilize her expertise on alternate energy sources.
