SYLLABUS ON SS 100

(WORLD OF WORK)

 

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

 

This course is designed to provide the student with an opportunity to examine work roles, jobs, the importance of work to the community and to the individual, and to teach important ideas and attitudes relating to world of work.

 

PRE-REQUISITE:  None                              CREDITS:  3

 

GENERAL OBJECTIVES:

 

At the end of the course, the students are expected to:

 

  1. Build background knowledge about a broad spectrum of occupations.
  2. Explore work values.
  3. Expose to the world of work and opportunities to respond to it in a variety of ways.

 

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:

 

At the end of the course, the students are expected to:

 

  1. Define world of work.
  2. Discuss/report on about men and women changing work roles in Micronesia.
  3. Develop career decisions and to exercise choices.
  4. Discuss the need for specialization in career fields.
  5. Report on about relevant skills for jobs of the future time.
  6. Compile knowledge of the various methods and levels of compensation for several occupations and relate this information to his own occupational area.
  7. List various job information sources including national and state government agencies, private sectors, newspaper advertisements, civil agencies, etc.
  8. Prepare a resume/personal data sheet and fill up a job application form.
  9. Demonstrate the skills necessary for an interview for employment.
  10. Identify the need to develop positive interpersonal relationships between the employer and employee.
  11. Demonstrate an understanding of job ethics.
  12. State and discuss the national and local laws dealing with labor.
  13. State and discuss the various methods of pre-service and in-service training necessary for occupational upgrading or retraining.

METHODS OF INSTRUCTION:

 

Lecture/discussion, conducting interviews, visiting manpower development offices, guest speakers, videotapes, and various individual and group assignments.

 

EVALUATION:

 

Grades will be assigned based on the following percentage of total points received from exams, projects, quizzes, field trip projects, and the mid term and final:

B…………………………80 – 89%

C…………………………70 – 79%

D…………………………60 – 69%

F…………………………59% and below

 

ATTENDANCE POLICY:
