There are many tales told of how yap came about. Different parts of the island claim to have been the original inhabitors of the island originally called "Waab." However, all myths claim that yap sprang from spirits (told in many forms and versions). Since Yap passed history through songs and dances, rather than through a written form, Yapese versions of their history have grew in variance through the many years and times told over from elders to siblings and children.
Yap is irrefutably one of the most traditionally intact island in Micronesia. Still proud and fluent in their traditional practices, the people of Yap have kept most of their culture and traditional lifestyles as they were before the intrusion of Westerners. In the villages, far from town, a visitor can still see men and women in their traditional attires going about their business. During festivals, dances and traditional performances still make celebrations in Yap unique from any other.
World renowned for its great dive destinations, and initially put on the DIVERS map for its Mantas, Yap is a must for any diver looking for underwater wonders.
