Individual plant presentations general notes

Suppose I write up on the board:

To treat the symptoms of the flu, collect the leaves of Clerodendrum inerme var. oceanicum, pound the leaves, squeeze the juice out, and drink it.

If I now send you to bring me that plant, could you?
Why not?

You would need to know the name of the plant in your own language. So if I write ilau on the board, who here could now bring me this plant?

Now only the Pohnpeians could bring me this plant.

If I show you the plant, then others might identify the plant. This plant, however, is hard to identify unless you see the flowers. The flowers are important to identifying a plant. This is why you must bring a specimen to class, if possible including the flowers and fruit. For the other students, here is the name of the plant:

Use the Rubiaceae folder from the herbarium. Show students Clerodenrum inerme var. oceanicum. Note the need to record flower color prior to pressing. Show plant data sheet, hand it out.

• For the individual plant presentations you are required to bring in the plant or parts of the plant you are presenting to the class. This is so other students can try to recognize the plant and give us its name in their own language.
• You should have the plant parts that are listed in the "Necessary parts for identification by phylla," if possible. Of course some plants only bloom at certain times of the year, so you might not be able to obtain flowers and/or fruit/seeds.
• If the plant parts are too large and the plant is a common plant (e.g. Cocos nucifera, Pandanus spp., etc.), then you do not have to bring that in.
• Over the next day or two you will be giving an individual presentation on a plant that heals.
• Do not do the same plant as someone else from your island. People from different islands can do the same plant.
• If you are from Pohnpei, be aware that many students will hit on talking about weipwul. Avoid weipwul to avoid duplication.
