Focal length versus apparent magnification

Note that magnification as used in this document is not conformant to the optics definition

Using a magnifying lens, generate a focused image of the fluorescent lights onto a sheet of blank paper. Measure the focal length distance in centimeters as seen in the diagram.

Measure the apparent magnification by placing a meter stick on the table. Hold a magnifying class above the meter stick so as to produce a magnified image of the meter stick. Using a ruler, measure the apparent size of one centimeter on the meter stick as seen through the magnifying glass. The instructor will demonstrate. The image of the centimeter should be the largest that can be produced while remaining in focus. The apparent size in centimeters as read on the ruler is the apparent magnification. Technically the apparent magnification is the apparent size divided by the actual size, so the units cancel out (there are no units to magnification). Record your results.

Repeat for as many different magnifying glasses as you can find in the laboratory.

The rest is up to you: write up a complete report with an analysis.
